The Scope Creep Invoice

Enter your answers, then provide your email to view and receive your result.

Every new responsibility handed to you without a comp change is scope your paycheck did not account for. The job grew. The invoice did not.

What this reveals. One number: the annual dollar value of the responsibilities added to your role since your last comp change, priced at the market premium for that scope, and cumulative over the years you have carried the expanded scope.

What it does not do. It does not tell you to file a grievance or refuse the added work. It models the size of the added scope not reflected in pay so the next comp conversation is anchored in evidence.

Question 01 of 05

What is your current base compensation?

Annualized base salary today. Not including bonus or equity.

Question 02 of 05

How long since your last meaningful comp change?

A real base adjustment or promotion. Not a merit tick. The last time your comp reflected a step change in scope.

6 months
1 year
2 years
3 or more yearsMultiple review cycles held
Question 03 of 05

How many new responsibilities have you absorbed?

Direct reports added. Regions absorbed. Programs owned. Products taken over. Reorg-driven expansions. Count the material additions.

1 to 2 additions
3 to 5 additions
6 to 10 additionsA structural role expansion
More than 10A different job, same title
Question 04 of 05

What market premium would that scope expansion warrant?

The percentage above base that a market-rate role including those added responsibilities would pay. Source from salary bands, peer conversations, or offers to comparable candidates.

5 percentModest scope adjustment
10 percentStandard scope expansion
20 percentSubstantial role expansion
30 percentPromotion-band premium
Question 05 of 05

What share of that premium has been reflected in your comp?

Adjustments already made in response to the added scope. If nothing has been adjusted, the answer is 0 percent.

0 percentNo adjustment
25 percentInformal or partial
50 percentHalf addressed
75 percentMost addressed
Scope Expansion Not Reflected in Pay
$0

the total dollar value of scope added but not reflected in your comp

What this reveals

The number above is the modeled value of the scope you have absorbed since your last comp change. It is not an amount owed to you. Priced at the market premium for that expansion, net of any partial adjustment already made, and applied over the years you have carried it.

Where the invoice comes from
Market-adjusted base-
Annual scope premium-
Net annual, not reflected in pay-
Cumulative over years held-
How the invoice moves
If premium were 30 percent-
If no adjustment ever comes (0 percent reflected)-
Cumulative if carried 3 more years-

Assumptions used: base comp, duration since last change, count of additions, market premium, and reflected share, all inputs you selected. The invoice is a scenario built from those inputs. It is not a claim against your employer, a formal grievance, or negotiation advice.

This estimate helps you examine how your responsibilities have changed since your last compensation adjustment. Its usefulness depends on the records and assumptions behind it.

If a role review or scope discussion is approaching, the next question is what compensation or responsibility change you can support. Decision Desk™ examines the evidence and prepares a documented position for that discussion.

Bring one date to the Review: the proposed scope agreement, review, or compensation submission date. If it is not set, say so.

Request a Decision Desk™ fit review

The Private Decision Review determines whether the Decision Desk™ is appropriate for the decision in front of you. The Decision Desk™ investment is $5,000, invoiced after acceptance. Nothing is charged for the Review, and submitting it creates no obligation on either side. You remain the decision-maker and negotiator.

BWWL®’s automated guide helps you identify a useful next step. Please omit names and confidential information.

How your information is used
  • This is an automated guide, not a conversation with Cynthia. What it says it understood is not her judgment. It does not calculate, value, or predict anything.
  • To respond, what you type is sent, with the guide’s running summary, to Anthropic’s language service, which interprets it. The Lab does not keep it for that purpose. Anthropic keeps requests for 30 days and does not use them to train its models. That is separate from BWWL®’s research retention below, which happens only if you accept.
  • Nothing is kept by the Lab unless, after your recommendation, you accept a separate research permission. Declining, or leaving the page, keeps nothing. Your words never enter the page address, your browser’s storage, or analytics.
  • If you accept, the conversation, the guide’s summary, the suggestion you were shown, and the time are kept for 24 months, with no name, email, or identifier. Research permission is separate from email marketing and from any public use of your words.
  • No contact information is needed to receive a recommendation.
