The Refresh Grant Gap
Enter your answers, then provide your email to view and receive your result.
The equity grant that got you in the door was a first payment. Refresh grants are the maintenance. When they stop, the equity portion of your comp is quietly deprecating.
What this reveals. One number, the sum of two parts: hypothetical annual refresh grants for the years since your last refresh, and the same for any additional years you select. Each part is shown on its own row. A refresh grant is hypothetical unless your agreement provides one.
What it does not do. It does not tell you when to raise the issue. It documents the number to raise it with.
What is the annualized value of your original grant?
Total original grant divided by the number of vesting years.
How many years since your last refresh grant?
What annual refresh percentage do you want to model?
The annual refresh grant you want to model, as a percentage of the original grant's annualized value. The tool multiplies your annualized grant by this percentage.
What is the annual growth in grant value at your company?
The tool sizes the first hypothetical grant with no growth. Each later year's grant is the prior year's grant increased by this rate. At 0 percent every year's grant is the same.
How many more years might pass before a refresh comes?
the sum of hypothetical refresh grants for the years since your last refresh and for the additional years you selected
The number above is the sum of two figures shown below: hypothetical refresh grants for the past years you entered, and hypothetical refresh grants for the additional years you selected. The projected part has not happened. If you selected 0 more years, the number above covers past years only.
A refresh grant is hypothetical unless your agreement provides one. The tool assumes you received no refresh grant in any year it counts.
Assumptions used: original annualized grant, years without refresh, refresh percentage, grant-value growth, and more years projected. All are inputs you selected. Tool assumptions: no refresh grant was received in any year counted, the first hypothetical grant carries no growth, and each later year's grant is the prior year's grant increased by the growth rate you selected. Figures are rounded for display, so the two rows can differ from the total by a small amount. This is a scenario. It is paper value, not cash. A refresh grant is hypothetical unless your agreement provides one.

This estimate models the value of refresh grants you did not receive, past years and projected years shown separately, under the grant size and growth you entered. It is a hypothetical. A refresh grant is not an entitlement unless your agreement says so.
If an award cycle is approaching, the open question is the grant you will propose and the evidence for it. Decision Desk™ examines both and prepares a documented position for the review.
Plan terms and tax treatment decide what this equity is actually worth to you. Confirm both with qualified counsel and a tax adviser before relying on any figure here.
Bring one date to the Review: the date award recommendations are due. If it is not set, say so.
The Private Decision Review determines whether the Decision Desk™ is appropriate for the decision in front of you. The Decision Desk™ investment is $5,000, invoiced after acceptance. Nothing is charged for the Review, and submitting it creates no obligation on either side. You remain the decision-maker and negotiator.

BWWL®’s automated guide helps you identify a useful next step. Please omit names and confidential information.
How your information is used
- This is an automated guide, not a conversation with Cynthia. What it says it understood is not her judgment. It does not calculate, value, or predict anything.
- To respond, what you type is sent, with the guide’s running summary, to Anthropic’s language service, which interprets it. The Lab does not keep it for that purpose. Anthropic keeps requests for 30 days and does not use them to train its models. That is separate from BWWL®’s research retention below, which happens only if you accept.
- Nothing is kept by the Lab unless, after your recommendation, you accept a separate research permission. Declining, or leaving the page, keeps nothing. Your words never enter the page address, your browser’s storage, or analytics.
- If you accept, the conversation, the guide’s summary, the suggestion you were shown, and the time are kept for 24 months, with no name, email, or identifier. Research permission is separate from email marketing and from any public use of your words.
- No contact information is needed to receive a recommendation.
Describe the situation in your own words. I’ll ask a few questions to help identify a useful next step.
